In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over a few of the most common HVAC myths that have spread around popular culture. These pieces of misinformation are both frustrating and potentially costly, causing homeowners to take incorrect approaches while caring for important components in their HVAC system throughout the year.
At My Buddy the Plumber, we're here to not only provide a wide range of HVAC services, from furnace installation and repair to smart thermostats, duct inspections and more, but also to offer our clients proper information and expertise on the care and maintenance of their entire system. We've set the record straight on unfortunate HVAC myths for many clients, and we're happy to do the same for you. Here are a few additional such myths you may have heard, plus the correct information on each.
When purchasing a new thermostat, some simply assume that this unit can be placed anywhere within their home, and that it'll still be able to accurately regulate the temperature of that area. While this is true of some systems on the market, many others require precise placement of certain units or sensors in order to work properly.
If the thermostat is installed in an area that receives constant sunlight, for instance, it'll struggle to accurately read the temperature of the room. Many manufacturers recommend hanging it near a window for this reason, or in another location that's not exposed to direct sunlight during at least part of the day.
We're not sure where this one came from, but the opposite is true: Rather than letting your furnace or AC run all day while you're gone, the smart move is to switch the system off until you're ready for it to come back on. Keeping your entire HVAC unit running all day wastes energy, which could otherwise be used even more effectively if the system moves air around during warmer or cooler hours of operation.
This is where programmable thermostats really shine, as they allow homeowners to set their systems to automatically turn off when they're gone, and then return to normal settings in time for them to be comfortable when they arrive home.
Like any other complex mechanical system, your HVAC setup needs care and maintenance in order to stay running properly and avoid breakdowns or expensive repairs. A certified technician will be able to perform comprehensive system checks, clean components and check for any parts that need replacement.
Just because your yearly HVAC inspection is completed doesn't mean it's time to set everything aside until the next year. The longer you wait between such visits, the greater your risk of a major system breakdown that could be damaging to your home and costly to fix.
