Staying Safe in Extreme Utah Summer Temperatures

With spring in full swing and summer quickly on the way, homeowners everywhere are turning their focus from home heating to home cooling. Spring is a great time to get the air conditioner and other cooling components ready for the summer ahead, plus ensure the entire HVAC system is prepared.

At My Buddy the Plumber, our team of air conditioning repair and installation technicians is here to help you and your family stay cool and comfortable throughout the hot Utah summer, all without putting a major strain on your HVAC system or running up your AC bill. Here are some general tips we can offer here, both on indoor cooling areas and other tactics for keeping the entire family safe even when the heat rises.

Home Temperature and Cooling Concerns

Staying cool and safe during summer starts with an indoor haven from the heat, and that comes with proper maintenance and upkeep to your air conditioner. This sort of maintenance can be performed throughout the year in the form of basic inspections and minor upkeep areas, and in services our professionals will assist you with.

In addition to keeping the building cool, encourage those who live in it to stay inside during the hottest periods. Outdoor activities should be scheduled during the morning or evenings when the hot sun not at its strongest, or postponed on especially hot days. In cases where the AC or any element of the cooling system breaks down, call us right away for service to prevent heat risks.

Drinking Fluids

One of the top risks of major heat is dehydration, which can lead to several health issues if not addressed. Even if you or others in your home don’t feel thirsty, be sure to drink water all day, especially if you’re spending time outside in three-digit temperatures. If you drink alcohol or caffeine regularly, we might suggest limiting these on especially hot days, as they can contribute to dehydration.

Proper Clothing

Plan to spend the summer wearing light, breathable clothes. If possible, look for clothes that fit loosely and are as comfortable as possible.

Children, Pets and Cars

Parents and pet owners should all know this already, but in case they don’t: Children and animals should absolutely never be left in a hot car, not even for a quick errand. Temperatures inside the car can rise at extremely fast rates, and can risk major health concerns or even death.

Signs of Heat Concerns

Both for yourself and family members or pets, understand the signs of heat exhaustion. Symptoms like clammy skin, dizziness, nausea, headache, extreme sweating, vomiting or similar areas may signal heat exhaustion or even heat stroke in some cases. If you notice any of these in someone in your home, get them out of the heat right away and call 911 if they do not improve.
