Older Provo AC Issues: Warm Air, Cycling, Wiring

Older Provo AC Issues: Warm Air, Cycling, Wiring

In part one of this two-part blog series, we looked at some of the main concerns you might be dealing with if your air conditioner is on the older side. Older units tend to wear down and have more issues than newer ones, and some of these can be so significant that they prompt a replacement of the unit.

At My Buddy the Plumber, we're here to help with a number of air conditioning needs for our Provo clients, from repair to new AC installations -- this spring period we're in right now is often ideal for repairs or replacements of an aging AC unit. What are some of the other main issues you may deal with if your unit is older, and when might you consider replacing it? Here's a primer.

Warm Air Blowing

There could be a few reasons why this might happen. One possibility is that your air conditioner's Freon levels may be low, which would need to be recharged by a professional. If the Freon levels seem fine, another potential issue could be that the compressor isn't working as it should. This is a more serious problem that would require AC repair or replacement.

In other cases, the issue has to do with your filters. If they're old or caked with dirt and debris, that can restrict airflow and prevent your unit from working as efficiently as possible. Simply replacing the filter could do the trick -- you should try this before moving to other more significant measures.

Cycling on and Off Repeatedly

In other situations, you may notice that your air conditioner seems to be cycling on and off repeatedly, rather than staying on for long periods of time. This could also have to do with blocked airflow, as a result of dirty filters or other causes. If the coils inside your unit are frozen, that's another possibility -- this is generally indicative of a Freon issue.

This also may indicate that your unit is too small or too large for the space it's meant to be cooling. If your unit is too small, it will have to work harder and cycle on and off more frequently in order to cool your home adequately. On the other hand, if the unit is too large, it will cool the air too quickly, resulting in the same on-and-off cycling.

Wiring Issues

While you should never be attempting to repair electrical wiring yourself, it's worth being aware that this is another potential problem with older air conditioners. If the unit isn't getting enough power, or if there are loose or damaged wires, that can lead to all sorts of issues.
