For many, the holiday season that’s quickly approaching is one where hosting guests is a top priority. Whether we’re talking out-of-town family and friends who stay over at your house or just that big holiday party you like to throw every year, there are plenty of such situations to think about.
At My Buddy the Plumber in Provo, we’re here to ensure that your home itself is prepared for such guests and events, particularly your HVAC and furnace systems. The last thing you want is to be hosting a major event or entertaining out-of-town guests only to experience a heating outage or some kind of HVAC emergency. Here are several tips to avoid any such risks, both in terms of home DIY projects and areas where our pros will assist you.
For starters, if you haven’t already had your furnace and HVAC system inspected during the fall or early winter, you’re overdue and should see to this immediately. Scheduling a basic furnace inspection and tune-up with our team allows us to identify any issues that might be present, from worn-down components to filter problems and many others – and to remedy them before they grow into larger concerns. Make sure this is handled before guests arrive to limit any risks of a breakdown or emergency while they’re present.
One area you can see to yourself is ensuring HVAC filters and air vents are clean and clear. Filters should be changed at least once every few months, and sometimes more often depending on your filter type and whether you have pets. It’s also easy to do some basic dusting and cleaning on visible vent areas to ensure they are letting air pass through cleanly and easily.
In addition, we recommend duct cleaning – another area our team will be happy to assist with. For areas you can’t reach yourself, we recommend leaving this to the pros.
One little trick we can offer for those hosting larger holiday parties or gatherings: If there will be lots of people in a relatively small space, you can usually turn the thermostat down a degree or two from the desired range. This is because all that body heat in one space will actually raise the room’s temperature by a few degrees, meaning you’ll keep folks comfortable plus limit your heating bill by turning the thermostat down.
Finally, if you know you’ll have guests staying over during the holidays, prepare their rooms when it comes to heating and air. Ensure all their vents are open and cleaned, plus leave an extra blanket or two just in case they get cold.
