Before you start considering the worst-case scenario, do the math. When was the last time you replaced it? In general, they are built to last about 10 years. But some issues unrelated to age can cause leaks.

What to Do When You Spot a Leak

First, call a plumber. Don’t try to do any repairs on your own, unless you have both plumbing training and experience. Explain where you see the leak coming from and how fast the water is coming out. Your plumber may tell you to shut off the water line leading to your water heater.

Is a Repair Possible?

If the leak is coming from the cold and hot water inlet or outlet connectors, the repair may be as simple as tightening the connections or replacing faulty components. This would be a cheap fix.

If water is draining from the temperature and pressure relief valve, you either have too much pressure inside the water heater or the valve has malfunctioned. Your plumber will be able to get to the bottom of it.

However, if the leak is at the bottom of the tank, it’s likely because the tank has corroded due to age, and replacement is the only option.
