Why Is Your Shower Water Pressure Dropping?

What should you do?

Call Your Water Company

One of the first things you can do is to call your local water supply company. They can tell you if any problem is affecting your neighborhood and if so, whether it will be resolved soon. The local supply could malfunction for many reasons, from leaks caused by construction to blockages from tree roots. Rule out a system-wide problem before investing in professional plumbing help for your home.

Only for Hot Water?

Now it’s time to run some tests. Compare hot and cold water flow. Do you notice a difference?

In some cases, shower water pressure drops when you have it set to hot because of a problem with your hot water heater. Mineral buildup and corrosion on the inside of the tank reduces its productivity and the pressure of the spray.

Only in the Shower?

If it’s not the hot water heater, compare fixtures. Is your bathroom sink’s water pressure fine? Sometimes shower heads can get clogged with mineral buildup. Try purchasing a new shower head and see if it makes a difference.

Check the Reduction Valve

Does your home have a water pressure reduction valve? Try to locate this — it’s probably near the main — and see if you can open it all the way. This could be the problem, especially if you’ve recently moved to a new home and the previous owner preferred a more restricted flow.

Mineral Buildup in Your Pipes

If none of these possible causes is the culprit, the issue could be related to general mineral buildup in your home’s plumbing. The likelihood of this increases with the age of your home. Consider hiring a plumber to check your pipes for flow restriction.

Plumbing Leak in Your Home

A drastic change in shower water pressure could also mean there’s a leak somewhere in your home’s plumbing system. If water isn’t flowing to its proper place, you will notice a drop in pressure. Find out if this is a problem by shutting off all water taps in your home and checking your water meter. Wait at least three hours, then check the meter again. If the numbers changed, call a plumber to locate the leak.
