Prevent Frozen Pipes in Your Home This Winter
You can prevent frozen pipes if you’re proactive. If you live in a cold climate like Utah, it’s smart to go over your frozen pipe prevention checklist every winter.
Close Supply Valves to the Outside
Do you have an outdoor hose? What about an irrigation system? All the outside water lines must be turned off and drained before the first frost.
Close the inside valve, then open the outdoor spigot to drain any remaining water. Leave it open all winter so no water builds up and freezes.
Neglecting this winter preparation chore can be costly. If the temperatures are cold enough, outdoor spigots can lead to a burst pipe indoors.
Plug Air Leaks to Keep Out the Cold
Do you have pipes on exterior walls or crawl spaces? Make sure all air leaks are sealed in these areas. Check your basement by looking along the top of the foundation. Add extra insulation where necessary to shelter your plumbing from cold air, and prevent heat loss in the process. You’ll reduce your risk of frozen pipes and you’ll lower your utility bill.
Use Heat Tape or Extra Insulation
Wrap pipes that are at the highest risk of freezing with heat tape or insulation to give an extra measure of protection against the cold.
When You Leave for a Trip
Anytime you leave your home in the winter, it’s never a good idea to shut off the heat. Always keep your thermostat turned to a minimum of 55 degrees. Also, open all your cabinet doors that have plumbing inside — this helps warm air circulate around pipes.
In addition, open all your faucets enough so that the water drips slowly. Keeping the water moving also helps prevent frozen pipes.
