• New outlet
• Needle-nose pliers
• Wire stripper
• Electrical tape

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

Safety first! Head to your circuit breaker and turn off the power to the room where you’ll be working. Confirm the power is off using a voltage tester.

Step 2: Remove the Old Outlet

Use a screwdriver to remove the faceplate, then unscrew the outlet from the electrical box. Carefully pull the outlet out, ensuring not to damage the wires.

Step 3: Disconnect Wires

Note the placement of each wire before disconnecting them. Using a screwdriver, loosen the screws and remove the wires from the old outlet. If the wires are secured with backstab holes, use needle-nose pliers to release them.

Step 4: Prepare the New Outlet

Strip about half an inch of insulation from the ends of the new wires. Wrap them clockwise around the corresponding screws on the new outlet and tighten.

Step 5: Secure the Outlet

Gently push the new outlet back into the electrical box and secure it with screws. Double-check your connections to ensure they are tight and secure.

Step 6: Attach the Faceplate

Snap the faceplate onto the new outlet, securing it in place with the provided screws.

Step 7: Restore Power

Head back to the circuit breaker and turn the power back on. Test your new outlet with a device to make sure it’s working correctly.
